The Gendarme Trail (Gendarmstien) Packing List

Total base weight including 400 grams of photography equipment was 5.3 kg and total pack weight including fuel and 4 days of food but not water was 7.6 kg. Total skin out weight = 9.5 kg. My trip report can be read here.

We shared the weight of the shelter; my wife carried the Hyperlight Mountain Gear full insert weighing 622 grams. The HMG Ultamid 2 with the full insert is a very lightweight shelter for two persons. Including stakes and pole straps the total shared weight was 1.2 kg.

gear that I did not use:

  • rain jacket
  • rain skirt
  • waterproof socks
  • trekking umbrella
  • wind pants
  • toe socks packed
  • water filling scoop
  • headlamp
  • ear plugs
  • extra camera battery
  • first aid kit
  • trowel
  • toilet paper
  • two days of food and fuel
  • tweezers
  • sunglasses
  • glasses hard case

The waterproof socks were for wearing in the evenings after a whole day on trail in rain. If we had stayed on trail then we would of used all the wet weather gear because it rained for the next two days.

If there was one item that I should of not packed then I would say it was the wind pants because I just used my long underwear in the evening. Although the pants only weigh 67 grams which is no big deal.

The extra toe socks were for changing into on day three and four; so these would of been used if we didn’t leave the trail.

Water is easy to resupply on the Gendarme Trail either at toilets, caravan parks etc. We didn’t need to fill water with the scoop; there were always outdoor taps available and the faucets we used were a long enough distance from the base of basins.

I didn’t use the headlamp but 36 grams didn’t break my back. I’m thinking about not packing the ear plugs on my future hikes as I haven’t used them for a while.

We didn’t use any toilet paper or had to use the trowel either. On day two we came by a public toilet 2.8 km from camp one so we could just use those facilities. There is no toilet at the the first camp site at Dybbøl. However, there are plenty of toilets along the trail.

As it turned out we had to leave the trail at the end of day two so we brought home two days worth of food and fuel.

There were no ticks, thank goodness, so the tweezers were not used. I have tweezers on the small Swiss army knife as well but I like to have these “stand-a-lone” ones handy in my waist belt pocket. Last year was “tick year” so I’m kind of used to having these ones handy in the tick season now.

I didn’t carry my sunglasses or the hard glasses case because I left them behind in the car 😡. I really missed the sunglasses on the second day when it was so sunny as we walked by the coastline right next to the water. In a way it was a good thing because I found a new way to store my expensive reading glasses at night; I placed them in a sock and then into the storage bag for my sleeping pad and then hung it from the centre pole.

I packed a larger and heavier towel 56 grams on this hike. I haven’t used this towel for several years. I planned for access for us both to a shower on the second and third days. I haven’t really bothered so much with that before but my wife liked the idea 😀. Anything to keep the peace.
